Organization
The Co-op is a member-based participatory democracy, with one vote per member household.
Co-op members are not landlords or tenants. Co-op housing is not public housing. They are self-governed, mixed-income communities, home to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The cooperative is collectively owned by the members, which give them a say in how it is managed. As co-operative owners, members work together to govern the co-operative and manage it in a way that fosters a strong community.
Members elect a Board of Directors from among themselves to manage the business of the Co-op. Directors are volunteers who have a legal obligation to act honestly, in good faith, and in the best interests of the co-op. The board is accountable to the co-op’s members.
Volunteer members assist the Board of Directors by researching and making recommendations on a variety of issues.
The co-op is at its best when members are engaged in the governance of the co-operative and contribute to its success by:
- attending and actively engaging in co-op meetings and events
- putting their name forward for election to the Board
- electing the Board of Directors
- volunteering their time on committees/task forces
- being good neighbours
- taking good care of their home
- paying their housing charges in full and on time
- Following the co-op’s Rules and policies
The co-op seeks members who desire a stable family environment, and welcomes applications from singles, couples, families and senior citizens.
Robert’s Rules of Order are used at meetings.
